Thanksgiving Weekend in New York City

Published by hockeychic2003 at 10:01 am under Uncategorized Edit This

It is 10pm on Saturday and I am in the Big Apple and guess where I am? I am actually home hanging out with my parents watching the Chinese equivalent of CSI I believe that takes place in Hong Kong and is completely in Cantonese.  I got hooked on it yesterday when we started watching it after dinner.  It is kind of cute with romance and some comedy and solving crimes which involved drug dealers and homicides.  How can you go wrong? I have tried to the best of my ability to always come home to have dinner with my parents even if I am out with friends.  Yesterday which was Friday night I met my friend in the Village somewhere and we went to an NYU bar and had a drink and then to some cozy little tapas place on West Fourth or close to there to have another drink and a snack (I had a snack!) to catch up.  It was an okay bar that we went to initially and we were remembering our days at Cornell and reflecting how shocking it is that our ten year reunion was right around the corner.  We watched some guys play beer bong and commented on how disgusting it was to drink beer that a ping pong which has bounced on the floor was.  This is how you know that you are older.  The only reason we didn’t look out of place at the bar was the fact that I look much younger than I am and so does she and that is thanks to the fact that we are both Asian.  Hanging out with old friends is just nice because they know you and they have known you for a while and they are dependable and you can just be yourself around them.  Making new friends is also harder and it’s also hard to know how much you can trust other people unfortunately.  Old friends have been there through the thick and the thin and have a proven track record which is nice.

Most of today I spent hanging out with my family as well.  This is the ironic thing, the older I get the more time I just want to spend with my family! When I was younger the only reason I came home was to go out or at least I felt like a loser if I didn’t go out in New York City! But now I spend most of my weekends at home in a very non-exciting fashion and primarily with family.  I have gone out every now and again and it’s fun but it is also expensive and it gets old pretty quick.  As much as I love New York I don’t quite feel completely at home and I do more so in DC at least in terms of going out.  There was also much talk about coming back to NYC permanently sometime in the near future.  However, in order to do that I would have to find a job that would allow me to live decently and use a skill set that I have not yet developed considering I can not currently do my chosen profession as well from NYC.  I have to decide whether my chosen profession is really where I want to be though although I have only been doing it for a little over a month currently. Anyway,….need to finish packing and please pray that I have an uneventful trip back to DC since I have opted to take the bus!
