Marine Corps Marathon Part II

Published by hockeychic2003 at 6:10 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

I have a special fascination with the Marine Corps Marathon because I ran it two years ago. I actually had registered to run it again this year hoping to improve my time but one thing after another made it probably not a good idea for me to run among which I wasn’t keeping up with my training for it since my hours at work were all over the map during the summer and then I got sick with shingles so that threw me off as well and then my knee wasn’t as healthy as it should be and I wasn’t sure whether I could withstand the additional training. And of course, there is the fact that I switched jobs and with health insurance in transition I didn’t think it was a good idea to go run a marathon. With that being said I don’t think I would have finished in anywhere near the time that some of the people I know who ran it finished. I didn’t realize someone else I knew ran it and he finished in under four and Z finished in under 4:18 which isn’t bad at all but I know he wanted to shoot for 4.  Oh well–at least I know what happened and how his run turned out.  I am NOT going to email him but at least I know how it turned out.  If he emails me I will respond but I don’t want him to know I was stalking him although I did cheer for him at the two different stops I was cheering for people.

I was suppose to meet my friend and her boyfriend at mile marker 11 to cheer the runners on and was able to see the elite group of runners run by along with all the ones who were in the wheelchair start.   Somehow I got lost between mile marker 10 and 11 and I think the reason was because a marine told me that mile marker 11 was 7.5 or something which was extremely frustrating.  I actually followed the running route back out so I didn’t know what happened.  So I some how wandered to mile marker 14 and stayed there because it was kind of spread out and there weren’t that many people there.  I thankfully bought my cow bell so I was just ringing it when people passed by and waited until after the 4:30 group passed by before trying to meet up with my friend.  I had signed up on line to get updates from when Z. was running so I kind of knew how his pacing was and tried to look for him around the 4 hour pace group but since I’d only met him once and had never seen him in running clothes I just screamed go Zach when the group passed by.  Perhaps he heard and perhaps he didn’t but oh well.  Not my concern.  At least I was there and I tried.  But seeing the couples cheering their significant others on was nice and made me wish that it would be nice to have that one day.  The wives who were there cheering on their husbands with their kids and vice versa with the husbands and the kids cheering on their wives.  That part I missed and although I was very glad to have a good friend there for my first marathon it would be nice to have someone there for future marathons.
