The one man in my life for the past year and a half

So today was my last day at my current job and it was also my boss’s birthday. Ironic isn’t it? My last day on his birthday. This was probably the one male figure I spent the most time with for the past 18+ months. Like all relationships it started off fairly well and the honeymoon period lasted approximately 6 months where I got to know him and he got to know me. Then somewhere along the road things kind of went awry and I got a little too comfortable. Things actually started going down hill when I inherited his long time clients who threatened to leave him by shopping for another lobbyist. As with all relationships communication is the key to happiness. Somewhere along the way I started resenting the way I was being treated and started acting out in ways that I should not have which included snarky inappropriate comments, less than stellar work, and a generally bad attitude. He then as a result started building up a list of things that had been bothering him where he expected more from me without actually telling him. Throw in a combination of being too comfortable with your boss and this is recipe for disaster which resulted in a less than stellar annual review and then another incident which led me to be reprimanded and put on probation under threat of termination within three months if things did not improve. In that three months things did improve dramatically which was ironic which led to much improved relations. The past month in itself has actually been quite good with my boss being extremely nice to me and more pleasant than he has ever been. Ironically men do not change that much no matter how old they are and whether they are your boss, your co-worker, or your significant other. Hopefully what I have learned from this experience will carry over to other areas and that my relationship with my new boss will be a great one where neither of us is disappointed.
